Connecticut Smallmouth HOT!

Connecticut Smallmouth HOT!

April Smallmouth are on fire right now. As the water temps seem to be holding around 44 degrees here in Northern CT, the pre-spawn smallies are starting to show off. Small flies and a slower retrieve seems to be doing the trick.

Pike are post spawn for sure. We are seeing fish with commitment issues and smaller males right now on the regular. Water flows are up and down with snow run off and mother nature dropping rain a few times a week but the clarity has been holding strong! Have dates available if interested in a guided trip!

Connecticut Pike - Post Spawn

Connecticut Pike - Post Spawn

After being on the water the last few days, and a few friends who fished as well, we are starting to see some post spawn activity for pike here in CT. I believe they are just wrapping up or about to be wrapped up. We have been seeing smaller males being active, and even landed a nice female outside of the spawning area.

The warm temps this weekend should really help water temps and post spawn pike. Kate landed her first pike on the fly! It was a very exciting moment for Kate and myself watching here skills improve every time out.

Spring is starting to book up, if you are interested in a guided trip, reach out, would love to fish with you! Happy Fishing 2019!

Safely Handling Esox Video - Great Figure 8 Eat!

Safely Handling Esox Video - Great Figure 8 Eat!

Kate, Geoff, and myself put our hearts into the creation of this video. Plus, there is an epic figure 8 boat side pike eat that you don’t want to miss!

To Safely handle pike and musky, is so important for the longevity of the fish. As most of pike and musky waters are not stocked by the state, it is imporant to handle them with care and return safely to the water. If you feel inspired, take a look at my YouTube Video, I think it will be helpful, and if you enjoy it, please share with your friends! Thanks!

Fly Tying - Pike & Musky Flies - The Compleat Angler

Fly Tying - Pike & Musky Flies - The Compleat Angler

It was a fun day Saturday at the Compleat Angler Fly Shop in Darien, CT. Scott and Bob are great guys and the fly shop is second to none. Has everything you can ever need for gear and fly fishing. It was a fun day meeting new people, sharing my passion for big flies. I hope to come back next year and will definitely be a regular at the Compleat Angler in the upcoming season.

Pogo Pike in Florida - Barracuda

Pogo Pike in Florida - Barracuda

We had a great time in Florida fishing the flats for toothy critters. Water temps didn’t cooperate for bone fish and permit. but site fishing for Barracuda was a blast! Lightening fast and fought like salt water fish do, burn your drag and test your skills!

Happy Winter all! -Pogo Pike

Pike in Connecticut - Still Decent!

Pike in Connecticut - Still Decent!

We are still getting out there, picking days the air temps are decent and the river flow is fishable. The rain today wont help the flows but water temps for sure. We got this one yesterday, water temps were 32.5 degrees but flows were a little above average. We made the best of it! A slow retrieve is key!

Why Knot Fishing & SVS Fishing Podcast

Why Knot Fishing & SVS Fishing Podcast

Last week I attended and sponsored a 1/2 day guided trip to support our Veterans at a Why Knot Fishing Event in CT. It was a great time for a great cause!

This Sunday, December 2nd, I will be a guest on the SVS Fishing Podcast, we will be talking musky, pike, and guiding topics. I can’t wait! Here is a link to their website: https://svsfishing.podbean.com/ They have had some great guests on over the years, a ton of info.

Now lets talk fishing quick, the Housy here locally has been fishing well for trout, despite the constant up and down flows. A friend got into 15 fish last week. There is a solid window this weekend through Monday. Going to get out and pike fish and guide. Air temps look good and flows should drop by then, no major rain in the forecast. As the kids say, Tight Lines!

Rain Go Away - Connecticut Fishing Guide

Rain Go Away - Connecticut Fishing Guide

After being back in CT from musky hunting in Wisconsin, we are just waiting for the flows to get back to somewhat normal levels. CT seems like Seattle this fall. The rain forecast for the next 14 days seem manageable.

The water temps are still good, high 40’s low 50’s. We are going to get some chilly weather next week however, it seems to creep back up the following week. If levels recede it should be good for the last few weeks of November. As long as you can dress warm and deal with low 40 degree air temps.

Stay tuned for some November fish pics.

Musky Boot Camp

Musky Boot Camp

Another fall in Wiso hunting musky on the fly is never boring, Hard work, discipline, and grinding everyday can pay off. Hence, the fish here. I got my personal best musky on the fly. It was an epic experience with a good friend Dan Daly.

Guiding has been hot as well. I spent the last two days with fishy dudes from Maine, we boated 5 muskies in 2 days. Water temps around 48 now, but under a cold snap and high water. I hoping the second half of October is just as fun and rewarding as the first half.

Tight lines to all!

It's Go Time!

It's Go Time!

It is game time my friends! The playoffs! Water temperature is dropping nicely, more cool weather in the forecast, shorter daylight hours, bigger pike are starting to get more active. Although I am going to miss the top water summer smallmouth action I am ready to hunt for big pike and musky.

This is my last full week in CT, 4 guided trips coming up, then driving 20 hours west to northern Wisconsin to guide and fish for musky with some amazing friends. I will try to blog a few times while out in Wisco. Happy fall everyone and remember, don’t fish where they aint ;)

Another Boat As An Option - Stealthcraft Hooligan

Another Boat As An Option - Stealthcraft Hooligan

Follow me on IG at Pogo_Pike It is always an exciting time when your new boat arrives! Last month I added another Stealthcraft to our repertoire, the Stealthcraft Hooligan! https://www.stealthcraftboats.com/?page_id=1108

After a month of using the Hooligan, I am completely in awe of how it performs. A good friend and fellow guide said, "for a small boat if fishes big". I have taken it down the skinniest of water with 3 people, loaded it in the bed of my truck, brought up and down river banks, with the little effort.

We now have two Stealthcraft boats, the 16 foot Power Drifter Jet Sled, and the Hooligan regular. If you have any questions or in the Northeast and would like to test of our my boats, feel free to reach out.

The Stealthcraft Hooligan opens up so much water most people can't float or get into areas a typical drift boat can. I am excited to have this as an option for new water and old water!

Late Summer Sizzle

Late Summer Sizzle

The smallmouth bass and northern pike bite continues to impress. With the consistent rain over the last few weeks has made for up and down conditions. However, it has done wonders for the fish. Keeping fresh water flowing as the water temps approach almost 80, it is for sure going to help the survival rate as fall is right around the corner. Top water is off the hook, pun intended. What a great time with clients and friends! Exciting! I have open dates for end of August and September! Come on out!

Carp On The Fly

Carp On The Fly

The journey continues.... 3 seasons ago I started site fishing for Carp on the fly. The desire to learn techniques and the most I can about such an amazing species has been burning inside me. Last weekend I was able to get out and do some exploring and June heats up, The water is on the low side, clear for the most part, and if you know where to find them in the river, they are doing their thing. Carp amaze me, to just sit and watch them act natural is special. They are so social with each other, very aware, and flat out smart, especially when you try to get too close to cast at them. That is a whole other can of worms.

Next season I am going to start to offer guide trips for Carp on the fly. I am excited to share this passion with my friends and guests on the water. There are plenty of YouTube videos and groups online to join to learn as much as you can. However, there is nothing better than on the water experience, The fish in the picture, is very special. It took me over 30 minutes to get him to eat and 5 minutes to bring to the net and get the pleasure to have my photo taken with him, or her.
